Plants vs. Zombies is a strategy and tower defence game in which players must strategically plant defensive and offensive plants to protect their home from waves of zombies. The Nintendo DS version alters the original gameplay to accommodate dual-screen handheld play, while adding a number of features not present in the standard PC release. Players can explore Adventure Mode, unlock new plants, face off against a variety of zombies and harness sunlight to build powerful defences in different settings. The DS version also features Survival and Puzzle modes, Versus multiplayer, four exclusive mini-games, Zen Garden content and 14 achievements. The Nintendo DS hardware is well suited to the touchscreen controls for selecting plants and managing the battlefield. This version, released in North America in January 2011, puts a unique handheld spin on PopCap’s popular tower-defense formula. Plants vs. Zombies Story

There is no cinematic story campaign in Plants vs. Zombies. Instead, the game offers a comedic take on a zombie invasion scenario where the player has to defend a household from escalating waves of undead enemies. Play as the homeowner, with Crazy Dave guiding you, and helping you introduce plants, upgrades and other elements throughout the adventure. The zombies approach from various angles and settings, so you need to choose the appropriate plants and utilise the sunlight available to you. Plants and zombie types are gradually introduced as Adventure Mode progresses, and the battlefield changes from daytime lawns to nighttime, pool, fog, and roof environments. The story remains secondary to the strategic gameplay and the campaign is mostly a frame for introducing new mechanics and challenges.

Plants vs. Zombies is a tower-defense strategy game revolving around preparing a garden for defence, both before and during zombie attacks. Before each level, players choose a set of plants. Every plant has a unique role to play, like attacking zombies, producing sunlight, slowing down enemies, shielding other plants, or dealing area damage. The sun is the main resource. Players gather sun and spend it to plant in the right places on the lawn. The choice of plants and where to put them is the key to successful defence. Most of the gameplay in the Nintendo DS version is controlled through the system's touch screen. The game also uses the dual-screen layout to separate battlefield information and other game elements between the two screens. The DS edition featured Adventure, Survival, Puzzle, Mini-game and Versus content. It also features four new mini games, and supports multiplayer via the DS wireless function.
