Tomb Raider: Underworld is set directly after the events of Tomb Raider: Legend and Tomb Raider: Anniversary. Lara Croft embarks on a personal journey to discover what happened to her mother, who disappeared years ago, after the destruction of her family estate, Croft Manor. Her quest takes her to the fabled Norse underworld and the lost kingdom of Avalon. The story takes the player to a series of exotic, richly detailed locations, including the jungles of Mexico, the coast of the Mediterranean, underwater ruins off the coast of Thailand, and the frozen wastelands of the Arctic. Lara also encounters old enemies, including Amanda Evert, and the remnants of the Natla Industries conspiracy on her journey, as she discovers the old Norse legends of Thor's hammer, Mjölnir, and the gateway to the underworld itself. The story mixes myth, discovery and personal loss to give Underworld a more emotional current than the previous entries, as Lara battles both external foes and her unresolved feelings about her mother’s fate.

Tomb Raider: Underworld expands on the exploration-based formula that the series is known for, which is built around fluid traversal, environmental puzzles and combat. Main gameplay features: Free-flow movement system – Lara can climb, jump, swing and shimmy across ledges with a more natural momentum based animation system than previous titles. Grapple hook mechanics – Used to pull levers, swing across gaps, and solve environmental puzzles Dynamic, interactive environments – footprints in snow, mud that sticks and washes away in the rain, and destructible environments that react to combat and exploration. Non-linear level design – Several stages feature multiple paths and optional secrets, encouraging players to explore rather than follow a strictly linear path. Combat and dual-wielding – Lara uses her signature dual-pistols, plus extra weapons, and a targeting system to deal with multiple enemies. Vehicle parts – Some levels have motorcycle parts, adding a bit of variety to travel. Puzzle-solving tombs – Optional puzzle tombs give players upgrades and story-related secrets.

Explore first, fight second – Most levels reward you for exploring thoroughly, looking for glinting relics and hidden passages before rushing to objectives. Use binoculars/PDA – Highlights points of interest and objectives in each area. Grapple hook early on, you’ll need to get good at it – plenty of puzzles and shortcuts rely on grapple-based mechanics. Save often – Make sure to use checkpoints and manual saves before any tough platforming segments or combat encounters. Look for environmental cues – Cracked walls, loose ledges and glowing surfaces usually hint at interactive or breakable objects. Balance stealth and combat – Some encounters can be avoided or handled from a distance using cover.
