The story follows Mark Evans, captain and goalkeeper of the Raimon Junior High soccer team. Mark is a football fan and wants to make Raimon's team strong enough to participate in the Football Frontier tournament. Raimon has difficulty competing against stronger schools. Mark begins to recruit new players and build the team against tougher and tougher opposition. As the story continues, the team faces tough opponents, learns new skills and works together to become one of the best football teams in the region.

Inazuma Eleven is a football game with RPG elements. Players can explore different areas, chat with characters, recruit footballers, train team members and play matches. Players move and select actions by using the Nintendo DS touch-screen during matches. Players can pass, tackle opponents, shoot at goal and use powerful special moves. Players can also recruit new footballers, change formations, upgrade abilities and learn new techniques to improve their squad. Inazuma Eleven is not a normal sports game. It mixes football with exploration and team management.
