Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars follows the story of Huang Lee, the young heir to a powerful Triad family from Hong Kong, who travels to Liberty City to deliver an ancient family sword – the Yu Jian – to his Uncle, Wu "Kenny" Lee. But soon after he arrives, Huang is ambushed, his father’s killer returns and the sword is stolen, thrusting him into the middle of a violent power struggle for control of the Liberty City Triads. As players unravel a complex tale of loyalty, revenge, and ambition, Huang finds herself entangled in a web of betrayal that includes rival gangs, corrupt cops, and feuding family members. Story is intertwined with the larger GTA IV universe, with characters and locations from the main game, but it has its own distinct flavour — darker, more mafia-oriented, and filled with the series' trademark dark humour.

Chinatown Wars is a retooling of the classic GTA sandbox formula for handheld hardware, and it comes with a handful of stand-out mechanics of its own: 1. Top Down Open World: Chinatown Wars is not a mainline 3D GTA title. It uses a top down camera angle similar to the original 1997 GTA. The player can freely roam a fully rendered, scaled down Liberty City featuring cars, pedestrians and mission hubs. 2. Mini-Games on Touchscreen (DS Version): The Nintendo DS version is notable for its touch-screen interactive tasks: hot-wiring cars, mixing drugs, defusing bombs and picking locks – all through stylus-based mini-games that offer a tactile depth that most top-down titles lack. 3. The Illegal Drug Trade Economy: A dynamic, unofficial "side hustle" system lets players buy and sell drugs across different city districts, with prices fluctuating based on supply, demand, and law enforcement activity — encouraging strategic travel and risk-reward decision-making. 4. Combat, Vehicles and Weapons: Players have access to a wide arsenal of weapons and a large vehicle roster, including motorcycles, sports cars, and boats. The series’ signature chaos of combat still remains, with wanted-level mechanics, police chases and destructible environments. 5. Mission Structure: The game features a mix of main story missions and side content, including gang wars, vigilante missions, and rampages, offering dozens of hours of replay ability.
