Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin is an action role-playing game developed and published by Konami for the Nintendo DS in 2006. It takes place in Europe in 1944, during World War II. As the two heroes Jonathan Morris and Charlotte Aulin you must explore the reawakened castle of Dracula and prevent the vampire artist Brauner from reviving Dracula from the dead. It’s still one of the most beloved entries in the Castlevania series, with the dual-character “Partner System,” co-op multiplayer and a world built around paintings.

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin Story

Portrait of Ruin is a spiritual successor to Castlevania: Bloodlines, following the son of that game’s hero. The game takes place in 1944 Europe during World War II and is a sequel from Castlevania: Bloodlines. The story is about vampire hunter Jonathan Morris and young sorceress Charlotte Aulin, childhood friends both from legendary clans that have dedicated themselves to protect mankind from evil. Jonathan is the son of John Morris, hero of Castlevania: Bloodlines. Unlike the Belmont family to which he is related, the Morris family doesn't possess the natural ability to harness the full power of the Vampire Killer whip. Charlotte, however, is of the Belnades clan, known for magical ability. The main threat is a new villain, the vampire artist Brauner, who has brought back Dracula's Castle to destroy the world and Jonathan and Charlotte must stop him. When the duo enters the castle, they meet Vincent, a priest sent to help destroy Castlevania. Outside the castle walls, the adventure takes an unusual turn. The main characters explore various paintings created by Brauner, which act as portals to entirely new areas with a distinct look separate from the main castle — including Egyptian deserts and London-inspired towns. Along the way the heroes meet a number of memorable side characters. These include Vincent Dorin, a monk who serves as the game's shopkeeper, a mysterious spirit known as "Wind" who plays a key role in the story and side quests, Death himself, and two mysterious vampire twins named Loretta and Stella. As usual with the series, the story does not end the same way for each player. Portrait of Ruin has two different endings, both involving Jonathan and Charlotte preventing Dracula's resurrection — though only one involves the actual defeat of Brauner and Dracula. Player choice at a key story point determines which ending is unlocked, with the incomplete "bad" ending showing a Game Over screen instead of full credits, while the true ending grants access to more of the castle and additional paintings.

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin Gameplay

Portrait of Ruin adheres to the traditional “Metroidvania” formula the series is known for, but adds a new twist in the form of character control. Basic Mechanics The game is a sequel to Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, which was a two-character gameplay, but adds new cooperative online functionality and deviates from much of the touch-screen-based mechanics of that earlier title. Like the "Julius mode" in Dawn of Sorrow , players can switch between Jonathan and Charlotte at will. Each character has a unique combat style. Jonathan serves as the primary physical melee attacker, while Charlotte functions as the magical ranged spellcaster — meaning players are encouraged to swap between them depending on the situation, enemy type, or puzzle at hand. The Partner and Double Crush System Portrait of Ruin introduces the "Partner System" which lets players swap between the two characters on the fly and also execute a powerful joint attack called the "Dual Crush". This combined move is not just a flashy attack , as Jonathan and Charlotte 's combined abilities are needed in certain areas of the castle to solve environmental puzzles and move the story forward . For example , there are sections where both characters must work in tandem to clear obstacles together . Exploration and Content The game world is dense with secrets and challenges to track. During their journey, the heroes face off against 155 different enemies, all logged in an in-game bestiary for players who want to hunt them all down. Multiplayer mode Portrait of Ruin also broke new ground for the series in terms of social features. It was the first game in the Castlevania series to feature a cooperative multiplayer mode, and the first handheld entry to include English voiceovers outside of Japan's original release. Wireless multiplayer includes a bonus Boss Rush Mode and players can buy and sell items with each other. Boss Rush Challenge starts with one fight available, with two more unlocked by completing a save file . You can select your character from a list of them at the start of this co-op mode, unlocked by progressing thru the normal game .
