Project DIVA Extend is not a one plot story game. It is a concert and performance simulator in the Vocaloid world. Players select a team of virtual idols, who sing a variety of pop, rock, and electronic songs produced by independent Vocaloid music producers. The Diva Room mode allows players to interact with their selected character in a casual setting in between songs and develop a lighter ongoing relationship with the virtual idols rather than a set story arc.

Project DIVA Extend retains the core rhythm-game mechanics of Project DIVA 2nd, but introduces new modifiers for veteran players. Core mechanics: Icons representing the PSP's face buttons scroll along the screen to the beat of the music and you have to press the corresponding button when the icon reaches the target marker. There are a total of 50 songs, 45 of which are unlocked thru normal play (14 new to Extend, 31 returning from Project DIVA 2nd) and 5 more only thru Edit Mode. New Player Tips: Practice the note patterns of each song on Normal or Easy difficulty before trying the Hard or Extreme charts. Save the 'Survival' and 'Cool & Fine' Challenge Items for songs you already know, they penalize mistakes heavily. In between sessions, pop into the Diva Room to unlock more accessories and customization options at your own pace.
