The story follows an unnamed street racer (the player character) who is betrayed by a rival named Caleb "Rev" Reeves at the conclusion of the events implied from the first Underground game. The hero is marooned and losing a major race. Sabotaged. This new city of Bayview sees the player helped back onto their feet by the mysterious "Rachel Teller" (magazine journalist and racing insider). Beginning at the bottom, the player builds their reputation from the ground up through small circuit races and drag events, working their way up through the city’s racing scene unlocking new districts, sponsors and car parts along the way. The end goal is to regain the title of top street racer in Bayview and settle the score with Caleb. This culminates in a final showdown that ties back to the rivalry set up at the start of the game. Underground 2 does not have the heavily scripted story as the later NFS games, instead it relies on short FMV cutscenes, in-game dialogue and career progression to tell the story. The focus remains on racing and customization.

Soundtrack: Featuring an instantly recognizable soundtrack of 2000s hip-hop, rock and electronic music that became a defining part of the game’s identity.

Start Your Career: After the intro cutscene players begin with a low-tier car and must complete beginner circuit and sprint races to earn cash. Reputation (Rep): Winning races and completing side objectives such as billboard smashes and camera hotspots increases your Rep level, unlocking new city districts. Start to Customize: Visit a tuning shop early on and add some basic performance parts, this will make races much easier. Progress by District As your Rep increases, each Bayview district will open new race types and dealerships. Spend Wisely: Decide how much you want to spend on performance upgrades (which will affect race results) and how much on visual customization (which will only affect Rep bonuses in some cases).
